Three people were killed and four were injured in six separate and unrelated pedestrian accidents in the New York City area over the weekend, according to July 28 news reports on CBS and News 12. According to the reports, the accidents occurred in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and on Long Island and began around 10:10 p.m. July 27 when 44-year-old Jose Santiago was struck by a northbound vehicle at the intersection of Nostrand Avenue and Avenue W in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn.

An hour and a half later the same night, a 45-year-old woman was struck and injured at Fourth Avenue and 17th Street in the South Park Slope section of Brooklyn, CBS News reports. The third accident left two people injured around 11 p.m. at 141st Street and Alexander Avenue in the South Bronx. Around 2 a.m. Sunday, a man in his 40s was hit by a silver colored SUV as he crossed Rogers Avenue at Kirkland Avenue in East Flatbush. The victim suffered two broken legs, the report states.

The series of pedestrian accidents continued into early morning Sunday when an apparently homeless 49-year-old woman was fatally struck by a white Chevy Camaro as she crossed 32nd Street between Fifth Avenue and Broadway, the article states. Also on Sunday morning, 50-year-old Jose Mendoza was struck and killed near the intersection of Main Street and Bay Avenue in Patchogue on Long Island. Mendoza was pronounced dead at the scene, News 12 reports.

It is at the same time sad and shocking that this series of pedestrian accidents, which left three people dead and several others seriously injured, just happened within a period of a few hours. It remains to be seen how the New York Police Department will handle these investigations. These accident investigations often take several weeks or even months to be completed and it is important that victims and their families understand their legal options. It is also critical that victims seek and obtain prompt medical attention.

Determination of fault and liability is an important part of any accident investigation. This could establish how much compensation accident victims or their families receive. That is why it is crucial that they get an experienced New York personal injury lawyer on their side early on in the process. They will be well served by securing the services of an attorney who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that the victims’ legal rights and best interests are protected at all times.
